Rhythms of the Heart Poetry Workshop with Marcus Colasurdo

Thursday Evenings, October 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd

Join us at the Corbin Studio & Gallery for Poetry Workshops! Four consecutive Thursdays in October - Starting October 1st, we will examine poetry from all cultures, eras, and types (some poems will be familiar, and some will not be). Poetry is also a vital part of the humanities because it helps us explore language, history, culture, identity, memory, and the shared human experiences that connect communities across time. Our guest and host is Marcus Colasurdo. Workshop attendees will be encouraged (but not required) to bring their own original poems (8 copies, please) to share with each person in the class. We will be discussing each poem, sharing suggestions, constructive criticism, questions, praise, and offering other insights that relate to the presented work. Everything is open to exploration of poetic craft! Each class is $10 or $30 if signing up for all 4 workshops. Terrapin Run Trailhead

The Somerset County Health Department is celebrating Walktober by encouraging Somerset County residents to get active, enjoy the outdoors, and discover local walking trails. Residents are invited to participate on October 1 from 10–11 am at Janes Island State Park and October 7th from 3–5 p.m. at the Terrapin Run Trailhead. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy a fun, family-friendly walk while participating in a pumpkin scavenger hunt. These events are designed to promote physical activity, healthy lifestyles, and the many outdoor recreation opportunities available throughout Somerset County. Residents are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes, and bring water. And everyone is invited. To celebrate October Disability Awareness Month and the theme “No Art Without Us,” Crisfield Arts & Entertainment District and local artists from the Corbin Gallery CO-OP hosted a free mixed-media workshop for clients of the Somerset County Community Services Center in Marion Station on September 24th. All supplies were provided at no cost to participants or the center. The public will have two opportunities to see the Center’s art: An art exhibit of their works will be held Oct 1st, 10-11:30 am at the Center and then again on October 2 at Corbin Gallery and Studio from 6- 8 p.m. Celebrate the art contributions of that are nothing "without us". CAED, Corbin, and the artists of the Eastern Shore community support their mission.

This benefit is in support of Bunky, who is a local Crisfield resident and artist. All proceeds from the sale of his art will go directly to Bunky and his family. The hope is to raise awareness of Guillain-Barré Syndrome, which is the cause of Bunky’s recent paralysis. Your support can make a difference for Bunky and his family. Artwork will be available for purchase, and monetary donations are gratefully accepted.

Event: 5th Annual Crisfield Heritage Festival

Date: Saturday, October 10, 2026

Time: 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

NEW Location: 1012 W. Main Street, Crisfield (at the Custom House)

Description: A festival with activities, entertainment, food, arts and crafts vendors, and live demonstrations showcasing the heritage of Crisfield. Demonstrations include crab picking, oyster shucking, decoy carving, seafood cooking, fish cleaning, net making & repair, baking a Smith Island cake, and more. Exhibits from the Pocomoke Indian Nation, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Janes Island State Park, the Coast Guard, and others will be there. Bring a Chair and enjoy local entertainment all day. Food will be available, including the Crisfield Lion’s famous Crab Cakes, local BBQ, and desserts. This is an event for the whole family, and Admission is FREE.

The Somerset County Health Department: Drive-thru Rabies Clinic

October 21, 2026, 3 – 5:30 PM

Sign Post Road, Westover, MD

The fall drive-thru rabies clinic for cats, dogs, and ferrets will be held on Wednesday, October 21st, from 3– 5:30 PM at the health department on Sign Post Road in Westover. The fee per animal is $8, cash only. Pre-registration is encouraged to cut down on clinic wait times. Call 443-523-1700 by 5 pm Monday, October 19 to register your pets. Maryland law requires that all dogs, cats, and ferrets be vaccinated against rabies by four months of age. Vaccinating your domestic animal not only provides protection for the animal, but vaccinated pets act as a barrier to keep the rabies virus from spreading between wild animals and people. Annual Halloween Parade & Trick-or-Treat

Saturday, October 31st, from 3:00–4:30 PM

Children of all ages are invited to dress up in their favorite costumes and take part in the parade, following the CHS Band and Majorettes along the route while collecting candy and goodies from local businesses and community organizations.

Local businesses and organizations will be set up along both sides of the route from 9th Street to City Dock. This is a great opportunity to connect with local families and be part of a fun, safe, and family-friendly Halloween celebration in downtown Crisfield.
